With options like Sutler’s Steakhouse on Camp Verde’s Main Street and Robbie’s Restaurant just north in Rimrock, small town dining can be surprisingly delicious—and dramatic? From a wild west murder before Arizona was a state to a destructive fire shortly after opening, the history behind these restaurants sound more like movie plots than reality.
Sutler’s is the Verde Valley’s oldest standing commercial building, with adobe bricks in the south walls laid in 1871. The Sutler’s Store supplied groceries, mining supplies, animal feed, and even bottled water to soldiers and settlers. It also served as the community’s only post office, telegraph station, bank, and trade agency.
In 1899, an outlaw murdered new owners Mac Rogers and Clinton Wingfield during an armed robbery. The business partners are buried in the historic Clear Creek Cemetery a few miles to the southeast.
Well over a century later, Sutler’s Steakhouse is now famous for their all-you-can-eat fish fry on Thursdays and slow-roasted, Angus beef prime rib Friday nights. Enjoy weekend brunch and live music four nights a week, Thursdays-Sundays. Their steaks are hand-cut in-house, and their fresh dinner bread is homemade every day. For lunch, the Philly cheese steak with provolone and the local, grass-fed, Angus beef burgers are large and in-charge. The huge portions make leftovers likely.
Whether you’re a vegetarian or not, be sure to try the mouth-watering, cheesy, scalloped potato appetizer in a cast iron skillet. Or the house salad for fresh, leafy greens.
When Robbie’s Restaurant in Rimrock first opened, they had a fire after only three months. Devastated but not defeated, the owners took a risk, re-opened the store, and were met with overwhelming success—selling over 200 pizzas in a day! For the past four years, Robbie and his sister-in-law Carol have been successfully running the restaurant, with friendly service from staff members like Amber, a Bartender at Robbie’s since opening day.
Now they’re in a larger location, with a dozen flat screen TVs and the ability to host events and parties. In addition to pizza and burgers, they also feature rare finds like nine styles of wings (including habanero), five types of fries, corn fritters, elk chili, and calzone Stromboli. They serve grass-fed Arizona Angus. Vegetarians can opt for the veggie pizza. When you’re especially hungry, try the all-you-can eat spaghetti meal on Mondays.
